How to be the best backpacker you can be…

Here are a few tips to help you be a better, happier and more efficient traveller!

Be REALLY Adventurous

Say yes to shit that you would usually say yes to. Try something the scares your shitless. You only get one shot at life, so you should just take a step back and say ‘fuck it’ and jump. To me, life is all about telling stories, remembering those crazy times and those moments you don’t regret.

Hit the travel scene as a solo backpacker at least once

I started travelling solo because I wanted to go to certain places and my friends either had no money, couldn’t get time of work or some other bullshit excuse. The real reason is that they’re scared to go out their comfort zone. I said ‘fuck it’ and booked my first solo trip and I absolutely loved it. I grew as a person and realised I could survive doing anything I wanted. Get outside your comfort zone so you can always be in your comfort zone!

Stay in hostels and make an effort to meet other travellers

This is where invites follow and plans form. You’ll find out about some cool shit you wasn’t aware of before. You just never know who you’ll meet. I still speak to some lads I met while going out for a smoke at a hostel in Vietnam in 2010.

Try the local food at every opportunity

The KFC and MacDonald’s in Thailand may have the McStacker Whacker meal or something on the menu that you can’t get at home but that’s not the local cuisine. Try new things.

Don’t over pack

I spent 3 weeks travelling around Peru and Bolivia with just a school bag. I’m king of packing light. Be ruthless. I only take one pair of trainers, I see backpackers with boots, trainers, plimsolls, flip flops and all sorts. One pair of trainers can do the same thing.

Don’t stick to your plans

Go with the flow. If someone asks you if you want to go and neck a shot of snakes blood but you have plans to visit a temple, well… I know which one appeals to me more (gulp). Just be flexible…

At the end of the day it’s your show – you’re the star so you should do what you want. Have fun and be a better traveller!
