The Nevis Bungee jump, Queenstown
It’s one of the most popular activities you’ll find on any bucket list. Everybody wants to experience the thrill of falling. During my travels I found myself in Queenstown, New Zealand. It was the home of one of the biggest bungee falls in the world. The Nevis bungee jump, a 134-metre drop. I booked my jump immediately. A bit expensive at 250 bucks, but it’s one of those things you just have to do.
I was giving it the Billy big-balls about how I wouldn’t be worried about doing the jump. We arrived and got harnessed-up and took a cable cart over to the jump platform. We waited for our turn. Eventually my friend was called, he stepped up and did a fearless Superman jump off the edge. I heard him scream his head off on the way down. He didn’t release the buckle after the jump so he was dragged back up like a chicken ready to be butchered.
It was my turn. I stepped up to my jump. I looked down and my heart skipped a beat. I was scared. It looked like a long way down. The guy counted me down from three but I didn’t jump. I told him to give me a minute. He counted me off again and then gave me a little nudge.
I was falling down, your breath is knocked out of you as you fall and you finally get your screaming and swearing done as the bungee wire kicks in. It was the most exhilarating feeling I’d ever experienced. There is no other feeling like it, it was truly amazing and well worth the $250 price. It was an indescribable experience. I couldn’t stop smiling after my jump. I still felt shaken.
How high? 134 meters (440 ft.) – The highest jump in Australasia.
How long will you fall? 8.5 seconds
How much? The jump itself will cost you NZ$250 – all transport included. AJ Hackett also throws in a free shirt. If you want video and photographic proof, it’s another $80. I just took my camera with me and filmed it (at my own risk).
Where? The check in for the jump is in Queenstown’s City Centre. The whole thing will take about 3 or 4 hours out of your day.
Is it worth it? Yes. For $250, you’re getting an experience of a lifetime.
